Castile y León is an autonomous community and historic region of northwestern Spain,. It includes the provinces of Valladolid, Burgos, León, Salamanca, Zamora, Palencia, Ávila, Soria, and Segovia. The capital is Valladolid.
Salamanca is famous for its 12th-century university, Renaissance churches and baroque Plaza Mayor. Segovia’s ancient Roman aqueduct has more than 160 arches, and the hilltop Alcázar castle overlooks the city. Ávila has an 11th-century fortification wall with 82 semicircular towers.
Castile y León is bounded by the autonomous communities of Asturias, Cantabria, and the Basque Country to the north; La Rioja and Aragon to the east; Castile–La Mancha, Madrid, and Extremadura to the south; and Galicia to the northwest.
