Don’t be fooled by the rather simple exterior of this beautiful church located in central Madrid. Founded at the beginning of the 17th century this treasure is unique due to its ellipsoidal layout. The walls are completely painted in sublimely beautiful frescoes. Take a moment away from the tourist hustle to sit and gaze in awe at the artistry. Many noteworthy artists of the day were involved in this masterpiece know as the Sistine Chapel of Madrid. Principally Francisco Ricci oversaw the decorating of the tromphe l’oeil styled dome.

Sorolla Museum

The Sorolla Museum is in the home and former studio of the great Spanish artist Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida. The house has been immaculately conserved complete with the garden which was also designed by Sorolla. Inside you will find the largest collection of his artwork, much painted in the Impressionist style. Alongside there is also his personal collection of ceramics, sculptures, antique photographs and letters received by Sorolla during his life. It’s a fascinating collection and well worth a visit.

National Archaeological Museum of Madrid

You will find that now is the perfect time to visit this wonderful Madrid museum. After six years of careful renovation it is finally open again to the public. With a rich collection of artifacts that span from prehistory to the modern era, this museum is also child friendly with the new layout incorporating informative displays and touchable replicas. A great place to spend a rainy afternoon or for some respite from the midday Madrid sun. The museum also features a café serving breakfast and casual meals. General admission is E3. However, they do offer free admission on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings see their website for more details about hours and admission.
